FAQs

Tunza Mama offers personalized service (in form of packages) for pregnant and postpartum moms in the First 1000 Days of Life. Tunza Mama caregivers are licensed by the Nurses Council of Kenya(NCK) to offer these services. Through this network, Tunza Mama is able to increase access to information on maternal and child services in Nairobi and Kisii Counties presently, with plans to expand in the near future.

The First 1000 Days start from conception, all through to the baby’s second birthday? Why does this matter? Because the nutrition that a baby receives in this first a thousand days impacts their health, their physical development and the cognitive abilities. This marks a very crucial window for pregnant women and their families, and is why Tunza Mama caregivers walk with you from pregnancy through birth and postpartum and even as your baby transitions to weaning.

Tunza Mama has a social media presence on Facebook and Instagram, which may be how you are here. Once you get in touch with us, we will take your details and look through the Tunza Mama network for the caregiver closest to you. At the heart of our services is personalized care. What this means is that the caregiver comes to you – at your convenience, whether at home or at the office.

Tunza Mama offers four packages.

  1. Birth Preparation package. This package includes birth preparation classes to enlighten you and help you to be more relaxed, prepared and in charge of your own experience. It covers unpacking Antenatal Care, how to detect, mitigate or react to danger signs during pregnancy as well as lifestyle and nutrition during pregnancy. This package is available from 28 weeks of pregnancy.
  2. Postpartum Care package. This package allows our caregivers to offer the recovering mother and new baby the support they need. It is tailored specifically for each mother to cater to their needs, depending on the nature of their birth and delivery. Additionally, our caregivers will carry out a mental assessment after delivery as part of our commitment to advocating for maternal mental health. In severe cases, we will refer the new mom to mental health professionals.
  3. Breastfeeding support. Tunza Mama advocates for exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months whenever possible. For new mothers however, this is not possible without support and information to make the right choices. The breastfeeding support package is available to offer this support and help new mothers latch properly right from the start. It also includes a home visit in the first 48 hours after birth (if possible).
  4. Complimentary Feeding – also known as weaning. This package offers support to mothers and their families during the transition from exclusive breastfeeding to the introduction of solid foods. The WHO recommends that babies breastfeed exclusively for the first six months, after which the baby can start on solids. A tunza Mama caregiver will conduct a readiness assessment for weaning to confirm that your baby is ready. This is then followed by training mothers and families on ideal meal preparation, both in theory and practical cook sessions. The idea is to provide adequate nutrition, variety and appropriate portion sizes for the baby through different stages of growth. After the first session, follow up sessions are made after about 4 weeks.

Each package has 3 sessions, each at KShs 2000. The total for a full package is Kshs. 6000. For a mother who would like all four packages as they progress from pregnancy, the cost is discounted. Click this link to book a session.
